Meg Maggio is a 20-year China resident, arts writer, curator and director of Pekin Fine Arts gallery in Beijing. She acts as advisor to leading museums, corporations and individuals on collecting and exhibiting contemporary art.
Prior to establishing Pekin Fine Arts, Maggio was Of Counsel with American lawyers Vinson & Elkins, LLP and prior to this worked as a senior attorney at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in their Beijing office. As such, she has advised China’s State Bureau of Cultural Relics, PRC auction houses, museums, and other PRC and international organizations on issues related to the recovery and preservation of cultural property and museum and auction house management. Maggio continues to write and to lecture on many legal aspects of contemporary art in China and Asia, and on international art law practice.
Maggio was also one of the founding principals of CourtYard Gallery in Beijing, and designed and established the CourtYard Annex, a warehouse-style alternative space for younger artists to exhibit experimental projects. Before departing to establish her own gallery, Pekin Fine Arts, she sat on the Courtyard’s board of directors and managed as Art Director of daily operations of the CourtYard Gallery and CourtYard Annex.
Maggio has curated various exhibitis including “Ink City”: New Video Installation works by Chen Shaoxiong; “Focus: New Works by Lin Tianmiao”; “New Works by Liu Wei”; and, “New Photography from China”. She also curated group exhibition “Reconfiguration” at the Museum of the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts, which highlighted works on paper by major western and Chinese artists including Marlene Dumas, Leon Golub, Nancy Spero, Mark Tansey, Huang Yong Ping, Liu Wei, Liu Xiaodong, Cai Jin and others. The show traveled to Belgium’s “Modern Chinese Art Foundation” in 2001, as the Foundation’s inaugural exhibition. Maggio has participated in various overseas art fairs, including London’s FRIEZE, The Armory Show in New York City, the FIAC in Paris, ARCO in Madrid, Berlin’s Art Forum, ART HK, Art Tokyo and Art Dubai.
