- Why I joined The China Business Network
While business is increasingly cross border, it still depends on mutual trust and understanding. We need tools to identify, qualify and connect with professionals on the other side of the planet. An online and offline network is the killer app for making those connections, especially when it also provides relevant content to support professional development.
- My Professional Life With The China Business Network
I basically spread the word to the cross border business, investment and education communities. Relationships, especially relationships built across industries and cultures, form the fabric of our world. I like the way TCBN uses technology and its open, accessible brand to help bring businesspeople together, share opportunities and learning, and make our global networks easier to manage.
- My Other Professional Life
Project Rebirth is a chronicle of the strength of the human spirit coping with disaster: the aftermath of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center. As a feature-length documentary combining time-lapse photography with intimate stories of ten people coping post 9/11, it is recording the minute-by-minute redevelopment of the WTC site and represents the first long term film record of ten people dealing with grief and trauma. As the Chairman of Project Rebirth I work with documentary filmmakers, grief counselors, and educators. What’s important about the project is its deep subject matter: the ways that people cope with and recover from disaster and loss, whatever it may be.
Growing up in Asia, I seemed to be surrounded by Chinese business people. So, in certain ways the Chinese approach to business has shaped my career. The Chinese have an innate understanding of how important commerce is in the overall fabric of a nation, and they excel at building relationships and resources over time. They’re patient and flexible, and over the past decade or so I’ve enjoyed working with Chinese clients as they reach into new markets for capital, for their products and services.
With a BA in from Georgetown University (CAS ‘79), in 1982, Brian Rafferty co-founded Taylor Rafferty, the leading global investor relations firm that for over 25 years has specialized in assisting international companies to build cross-border shareholdings and international capital markets capabilities. Rafferty is a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts, the CFA Institute and is a frequent contributor to articles in the international business press on international investing, ADRs and capital markets developments. He also serves on the Board of Tulchan Communications, a leading UK financial PR firm, the Board of Regents of Georgetown University, is a private pilot and the 2007 50+ North American Road Masters Champion, riding for Brooklyn’s own “Deno’s Wonder Wheel” Cycling Team. As Chairman of the Board of Project Rebirth, an educational nonprofit about the human response to disaster, Mr. Rafferty assists with development and implementation of Rebirth’s long-term strategy. Project Rebirth’s key asset includes extensive documentary footage recording the recovery process of 9/11 survivors. Mr. Rafferty joined The China Business Network as a Principal in early 2009.

I co-founded Taylor Rafferty in 1982. Since then, I have assisted numerous global clients in virtually every aspect of their international capital markets activities, with an emphasis on building comprehensive IR programs that achieve significant short-, medium- and long-term goals. Major achievements on behalf of his blue-chip client base include programs to grow foreign shareholdings to above 50%, ground-breaking cross-border acquisitions, defense work for non-U.S. companies with significant U.S. holdings, and substantial, quantifiable enhancement of clients' institutional, retail and national media profiles.
