China Business Boot Camp Cleveland's third panel addressed how to bring in new ideas without creating future competition.  Many attendees are worried about IP protection especially because piracy can be a problem in China.  This event was sponsored by the Greater Cleveland Partnership and Continental Airlines.

  Nina Ying Sun (Moderator)
Asia Specialist and Assistant Managing Editor, Plastics News

Ms. Sun is an Assistant Managing Editor at Akron, Ohio-based Plastics News, the leading business publication for the global plastics industry. She joined Plastics News in 2005 and helped launch the bilingual www.plasticsnews.com/china. Sun has dual master's degrees in journalism and international affairs from Ohio University. As a Chinese native, she previously earned her bachelor's degree in journalism, with a minor in economics, from Beijing's Renmin University of China. She worked as a reporter for Hong Kong's Chinese-language newspaper Ta Kung Pao and was a front-page editor of the overseas edition of People's Daily, China's largest newspaper.

Allan Goldner
Partner, Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff LLP
Co-Chair, China Group; Co-Chair, Polymer Group


Mr. Goldner is a partner with the firm's Corporate and Securities Practice Group. He serves as Co-Chair of the firm's China Group, which assists clients with China-related transactions and business matters; and Co-Chair of the firm's Polymer Industry Team, a multi-disciplinary group that focuses on the polymer, plastics and packaging industry. He focuses his practice on advising public and private businesses in a broad range of industries on domestic and cross- border mergers and acquisitions, green field projects, strategic alliances, and joint ventures, as well as financing transactions and general business matters.

Douglas H. Smith
Senior Vice President, Technology

Mr. Smith is a Senior Vice President at The Timken Company. Smith joined Timken at the company's Technology Center in Canton, Ohio, in 1991. He has held a number of research and management positions, including manager of manufacturing integration and automation and manager of intelligent products and systems. Smith holds bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mike Maczuzak
Founder & President, SmartShape

Mr. Maczuzak has been working in new product development for 25 years and is founder and president of SmartShape Design, a full service design and engineering firm with offices in Cleveland Ohio, Shenzhen and Suzhou China. SmartShape designs develops and manufactures products in a wide range of industries for clients all over the world. Mr. Maczuzak is passionate about design and innovation as well as business strategy. He has an undergraduate degree in Industrial Design and an MBA with emphasis on doing business with China.
