Executive Director, Energy Smart Cities Initiative

Dr. Stephen A. Hammer is the Executive Director of the Energy Smart Cities Initiative, which provides training and technical assistance to cities across China on energy efficiency and sustainability issues. Dr. Hammer was previously Director of the Urban Energy Project at Columbia University’s Center for Energy, Marine Transportation and Public Policy, where he continues to teach graduate seminars on urban energy systems and technology. Dr. Hammer regularly lectures on environmental and energy topics in the US, Europe, and China, and he has had several articles published in academic journals (Energy Policy, SAPIENS) and other publications (New York Times, New York Daily News). He is also co-editor of a book on climate change and cities, which will be published by Cambridge University Press in late 2010.
In addition to his work at JUCCCE, Dr. Hammer serves as a consultant to the World Bank, the state of New York, and is a member of New York City Mayor Bloomberg's Energy Policy Task Force.
Dr. Hammer holds a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from the London School of Economics, a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University, and a Bachelors degree in Environmental Policy and Planning from the University of California @ Davis.
